Members can be assured that we only collect personal information that is necessary for us to carry out the various functions and activities we undertake to provide you with products and services.
We value the strong relationship we have with our Members and we are committed to protecting the confidentiality and privacy of members' personal information. We take all possible steps to ensure that your information is not disclosed to or accessed by unauthorised persons.
How and why we collect your personal information
We collect personal information from you when you apply for membership and when you apply for or use our products and services. We collect it so we can:
- give you information to which you are entitled as a Member; and
- supply to you, and administer, the products and services you require.
- Performing administrative functions, including accounting, risk management, record keping, archiving, systems development, credit scoring and staff training;
We also collect it so that we can give you marketing information, unless you do not consent to that and advise our Privacy Officer accordingly (see below for contact details).
Personal information about third parties
You agree that, if at any time you supply us with personal information about another person (for example, a referee), you are authorised to do so and you agree to inform that person who we are, that we will use and disclose their personal information for the purposes set out in this statement, and that they can gain access to that information.
If your personal information is not provided
If you do not provide us with all of the information we request we may be unable to accept your application for membership or to supply to you the product or service that you require.
Marketing Information
We may, with your consent, use your personal information to give you information, that may be of interest to you, about the other products and services that are available from us, from our related entities, and from other businesses with which we or our related entities have relationships. Your consent will be implied unless you notify us that you do not consent to your information being used for this purpose. Web Site
When you visit our website, (www.ecu.com.au) the credit union uses session cookies to track where users go on our site. Our cookies tag each visitor's browser with a random, unique number. The cookie simply assigns a number and does not disclose any personal information about the person using the browser. By noting where these uniquely numbered browsers go on our site, we can study traffic patterns and improve our site. If you visit the website to complete an online form such as the loan application form or to send us an email, we will record the information you give us, including your email address.
Internet Banking
The Credit Union's eTeller Internet Banking facility uses Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) protocol to safeguard your information during online transactions. This 128-bit SSL protocol allows for messages to be encrypted (scrambled) so that the information sent between your computer and ours is meaningless to anyone else. Our server will run detection software to help ensure you are using a secure browser and your information is secure. If our browser determines you are not using a secure browser, you will not be able to access eTeller.
When we may give personal information to other organisations
Sometimes we may need to give some personal information about you to other organisations who provide services that assist us in supplying to you, or in administering, the products and services you require.
For example, the Credit Union may pass on a change of name, a new address, phone number or other personal information to another entity with which you may have dealings through the Credit Union; eg Health Insurance or other insurance companies who provide Credit Union Members with general, life, accident or loan protection insurance policies etc.
In addition, the Credit Union may contract out some services that involve disclosing personal information about you to other organisations.
Examples of such organisations are our related entities, card and cheque book suppliers, electronic funds transfer switch companies, printing and mailing houses, insurers, valuers, legal advisors, collection agents, conveyancers and settlement agents, and various third party suppliers of financial services (eg bank cheques, drafts, travellers cheques etc). These organisations may only use the information to the extent necessary to provide the services we require.
Sometimes we may be required to give some personal information about you to other organisations to comply with our legal obligations. Examples of such organisations are our auditors and legal advisors, APRA, Austrac, and the Australian Taxation Office.
Your access rights, and how to contact us
The Privacy Act gives you rights to access the personal information we hold about you and you can obtain this information by providing us with a written request. You can ask us to correct the information if it is inaccurate. More information is set out in our Privacy Policy.
