ECU Australia Celebrates International Credit Union Day

International Credit Union Day 2009ECU Australia is committed to giving back to our local community of Far North Queensland in the great global tradition of the international credit union movement.

This Thursday, October 15 is International Credit Union Day, a day celebrated internationally on the third Thursday of October, since its inception in 1948.

“Credit unions are not-for-profit financial cooperatives that provide an effective and viable banking alternative for more than 186 million members in 97 countries worldwide. They exist to serve their members, providing a safe place to save money and access affordable loans,” said Brett Myles, Chief Executive Officer ECU Australia.

We welcome all members to pop into their local branch and join us in celebrating with cake and marking our different kind of banking, that provides members with better service, a fairer approach to fees and a community focus, that is lacking from the big banks.

“Credit unions play a vital role in the economic development and stability of the communities they serve, helping people improve their lives through access to affordable financial services and supporting their local communities.

“Credit unions were set up all over the world as cooperatives, owned by members and for the best interest of those members and not to make excessive profits, and are committed to supporting their communities.

“Credit unions are recognised as a force for positive economic and social change and have provided significant social and economic value in both developed and emerging nations.

ECU Australia aims to provide the community with outstanding service, excellent products and banking with a conscience,” said Brett.

“ECU Australia is a mutual, which means we exist solely for our members – we are not publicly listed so we don’t maximise profits to pay external shareholders – unlike the banks.
